All numbers were written by Samuel Johnson, except no. 10 (by Hester Mulso Chapone), no. 30 (by Catherine Talbot), no. 97 (by Samuel Richardson), no. 44 and 100 (by Elizabeth Carter), and parts of no. 15 and 107 by unknown correspondents.
In U. of P. Libraries, bound in 3 volumes; the three title pages are alike, without volume numbers and bearing the date 1751. The contents and mottoes are inserted after the title page of the third volume. This copy was once the property of Dean Swift's friend, the Earl of Orrery, and each volume contains an inscription in his handwriting. v. 1-2: "Orrery. Leicester Fields. September 1751." v. 3: "Orrery. 1752. Marston. March 20th."
