Summary:
Describes the social and juridical situation of Jews, Blacks, and Mulattos in France and in its West Indian colonies in the 18th century. The Mendès-France Affair (ca. 1776), in which two slaves of a Jew demanded their liberty, was an occasion for vilification of Jews. The Encyclopedists were ambivalent, at best, about Jews, despite their professions of tolerance and equality. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism).
