Summary:
The story of a 21st century city coldly ruled by Joh Fredersen. A small privileged class frolics above ground while the oppressed mass of workers toils below ground. Freder, son of Joh, falls in love with the saintly Maria, a young lower-class woman who preaches secretly to the workers. The city is nearly destroyed when Joh's attempt to use a robot bearing the likeness of Maria backrires and the robot incites the workers to violence.
