The Chief Labour Officer of a private steel company resigns amid a corruption scandal and is murdered. The young secretary of the left wing trade union, Probir, and his friend Bijan, discover this, and are attacked by hired killers. Probir is killed and Bijan escapes. Probir's family, threatened by the killers and harassed by the police, leave their suburban home to settle in the back-streets of Calcutta. Nirupama, the sister, cherishing a silent admiration for Bjian, waits for him in vain. Extreme financial pressures force her to accept a job with the same company.
