- The letter dated 1836 is an introductory note for Van Buren's son Smith Thompson Van Buren for meeting James Madison. The permit dated 1839 is signed by Van Buren and John Forsythe, Secretary of State. It has a seal of the President on it, but the top of the document is cut off, giving no indication of what has been granted. It is from New Bedford, Masschusetts.
