Manuscript
5 items.
Language:
In German.
Summary:
The items are handwritten role books (actors' scripts) for a 1-act play. They have a uniform appearance and are labeled by hand as the property of Theodor Bloch, who was active in German-language theater in Philadelphia from 1873 until at least the mid 1890s, first as an actor and later as a prompter, and who also ran a theater lending library. The following 5 roles are represented (apparently the complete character list): Frau Paulsen; Gertrude; Klaus, 14 Jahre alt; Lars Krake, dänischer Soldat; and Neumann, preussischer Landwehrsmann. The role book for Gertrude contains lyrics for a song that is supposed to be sung to the melody of "Heil dir im Siegerkranz." The role books are labeled only with the title of the play; the author's name is not given. However, the title appears in Bloch's catalog for his library, dated 1886 (see box 34), where it is listed as a 1-act farce (Posse) with music, with 3 male and 2 female roles, and the author is identified as "Schröder." The author has been identified here as "F. Schröder" based on the assumption that this play is identical with one of the same title published as no. 128 of Eduard Bloch's Dilettanten-Bühne, described as a "Genrebild mit Gesang," by F. Schröder. (That edition was published around the late 1860s.) The items are bare of annotations and, to all appearances, were never actually used to prepare a performance. (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play.)
