According to W.W. Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Quaker genealogy, vol. 6, the calculator may be Benjamin Bates, 1769-1812. The last Bates almanacs were for 1813.
"In a few copies of this almanac, the following error escaped--2d. page 4th eclipse, instead of 'the edge of the sun disappearing' &c. read, the edge of the sun's disc appearing like a luminous ring around the body of the moon."--p. [40].
