Donatio Constantini [i.e. Constitutum Constantini] was a decree alleged to have been issued by Constantine I in which he transferred the authority over the Roman Empire to the pope. The authenticity of the document was considered suspect but it was not until the 15th century that Cardinal Nicholas of Cusa and Lorenzo Valla concluded with certainty that it was a forgery.
