Collection of novels originally issued weekly 1780-1788 as: The Novelist's magazine; or, Gentleman and lady's entertaining miscellany.
Each volume has general title page for the volume, dated 1780-1788; each novel has special title page and separate pagination and register.
The novels, some translated into English, are by Cervantes, Daniel Defoe, Fénelon, Henry Fielding, Sarah Fielding, Goethe, Oliver Goldsmith, Mme. de Grafigny, T.-S. Gueullette, John Hawkesworth, Mrs. Haywood, Samuel Johnson, John Langhorne, Alain René Le Sage, J.-F. Marmontel, Samuel Richardson, Tobias Smollett, Laurence Sterne, Jonathan Swift, Voltaire and others.
The plates were chiefly designed by Thomas Stothard and chiefly engraved by James Heath; the following eight plates were engraved by William Blake: volume 8, containing Don Quixote: plate 9, facing page 256; plate 15, facing page 535; volume 9, containing 6 novels: plate 2 of A sentimental journey, facing page 52; plate 1 of David Simple, facing page 66; plate 3 of Sir Launcelot Greaves, facing page 45; volume 10, containing the first, second, third and fourth volumes of Sir Charles Grandison: plate 23, facing page 328; plate 6, facing page 351; plate 12, facing page 442.
Among other engravers are William Angus and William Walker.
