"...Began in June 1862 as a pamphlet... Three 1862 numbers were originally called Vol. 1; and January and February 1863 were called Vol. 2, nos. 1 and 2: but it was then decided to leave the three initial numbers out of the file and begin it with January 1863. March-September are therefore Nos. 3-9 of Vol. 1; the remainder of the pages required for vol. 1 were then issued without date, repeating much of the initial numbers." Cf. Mott. History of American magazines.
Title from cover. Subtitle varies.
Publisher's note to readers in issue for Jan. 1863 mentions three numbers published [in pamphlet form?] in 1862, in which they intended to "substitute some new matter." Evidently this was never done and these early issues were omitted from the bound volume 1, 1863.
Issues for Sept.-Dec. 1870 incorrectly called vol. 9, no. 9-12; should be v. 8, no. 9-12.
Issues for Jan.-Feb. 1863 incorrectly called vol. 2, no. 1-2; should be v. 1, no. 1-2.
