Summary:
This is a manuscript of a polemic regarding the Ḳabala explication of both Yitsḥaḳ Luria (known as Ari ha-Ḳadosh or Arizal; Jerusalem 1534- Tsefat 1572) and that of his student, Ḥayyim ben Joseph Ṿital (Calabria 1543-Damascus 1620). The opening of the polemical text is the first three folios of the manuscript, and the text was written by Menaḥem ben Judah de Lonzano (Italy 1550-Jerusalem 1626) as part of a greater whole called Imre emet, or Sayings of truth; the purpose of the part of this work in the manuscript was to argue that Vital did not study or examine the teachings of his master fully (f. 1r, ... אבל מה נעשה והוא עצמו מסופק ברוב מקומות), thereafter arguing against points in his writings, all sourced. The second half of the manuscript is by Avraham Monson (North Africa? ca. 1555 - Istanbul 1619), known as a student of Bezalel ben Abraham Ashkenazi and a contemporary of Joseph Ibn Ṭabūl in Egypt. Monson's text begins with a harsh criticism against de Lonzano employing heavy prose (called Melitsah) and serves as a rebuttal for all of his points made in the order he wrote them. Included is a reference to earlier polemical correspondence to de Lonzano (f. 4v, "ומה ישיב (in bold) ומה יוסיף לדבר במה שהוסיף בקונטריס השני ששלח), perhaps implying that this is a gathering of what once was a collection of such polemical letters; however, the scholar Yosef Avivi writes in a description of the manuscript in the curatorial file for the manuscript that this text is the only extant text of Monson's rebuttal to de Lonzano's Ḳunṭres Imre emet.

Azulai (see source below) records viewing this manuscript during one of his trips through Egypt during the second half of the 18th century: "ṿe-ra'iti ḳunṭres k.y. (ketav yad) she-nitṿakeaḥ 'im M.h.r.M. di Lonzano 'al S.[efer] Imre emet she-ḥiber le-haśig 'al m.h.r.ḥ.ṿ (m'orenu ha'-rav Ḥayyim Ṿiṭal)... be-ḥokhmat ha-emet ṿe-khu[le]." Likely, this occurred during his second trip through Egypt begining Ḥeshvan to Iyyar 5533 (November-April 1772-3), as Azulai encountered Jewish communities in northern Egypt during this trip, including Alexandria and Bilbeis; being that the manuscript for Azulai's diary is incomplete for the Egyptian portion of his 1772-3 travels, the location where he viewed the manuscript cannot be determined; see: Hayyim Josef David Azulai, Me'agel Ṭov, ed. Freimann (Berlin: Meḳitse Nirdamim, 1921), p. 49-51, and the editor's introduction.
Sold by Kestenbaum and Company, auction 76 (June 14, 2018), lot 316.
