Summary:
Set in the period of the Napoleonic Wars, this is a historical novel about smuggling and village life in the Essex villages along the Thames Estuary. The central character of the tale being the "white wizard", Cunning Murrell, a conjurer who had great influence over the daily lives of the villagers.
