Summary:
"...today it can increasingly be observed that a new interest in the thinking of early Christian authors is developing out of what we have recognised as a lack of familiarity with the witnesses of the history or our own faith and culture. This is also true of the revival in the esteem in which the spirituality of the Fathers of the Christian Church is held. However, various difficulties stand in the way of this awakening interest in the literary heritage of early Christian writers. Firstly, there is a lack of information about which of the authors of Christian antiquity and which of their writings are even still available today, and there is no precise overview of the available text editions. Secondly, due to the fact that Greek and Latin are now understood by fewer and fewer people, readers today urgently need an aid to interpretation in the form of a reliable translation in a modern language ... This reference book ... should fulfill this need. Besides including brief notes on the available text editions, it also takes account of translations into German, English, French, Italian and Spanish."--Page xi.
