Born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England to Sarah and John Wright, a grocer and baker. Wright was a chemist, druggist, dentist and supplier of photographic materials in Burnley, Lancashire, England. He married Hannah Maria Thomas in 1884 and they had two children Sydney and Beatrice.
A decorative, stamped leather volume written by John W. Wright. The volume spans the years from 1867 to 1925 comprising pharmaceutical formulas for medicinal, hygienic, and household purposes. A tabbed alphabetical index is at the beginning of the volume referring to 121 numbered pages. Written on title page: Precaution, Receipt book, J. W. Wright, 1867. The volume contains medicinal formulas for balsams, drinks, essences, glycerines, pills, powders, syrups, tinctures, and unguents. The ailment or disease for many formulas is not apparent. Some remedies are for coughs, digestive issues, fevers, rheumatism, and toothaches. A few recipes use absinthe. Toiletry formulas include those for hair dyes and washes, lip salves, pomades, and skin creams and lotions. Several formulas are named for the chemist including Wright's: anti-rheumatic specific, cough wafers, pills, and postcard developer. Several household recipes for blacking, browning, inks, polishes, stains and varnishes are in the volume. There are also many formulas used for photography. A label for Wright;s Linseed and squills compound is pasted in on page 86. There are many notes, amendments, and items pasted in the volume. One leaf laid in the volume are instructions regarding blood and urine tests, now housed separately. A label for penicillin lozenges is laid in the volume.
