Summary:
Ben wants to be a trumpeter, but plays only an imaginary instrument until one of the musicians in a neighborhood night club discovers his ambition. A young African American boy dreams of becoming a trumpet player & eventually is taken to a jazz club by a musician. The story of Ben is fiction, but it could be the story of more than one jazz musician who grew up in the twenties. Using the art-deco style of the period, Rachel Isadora not only captures the poignancy and yearning of a youthful talent, but in page after page of striking art seems to convey the very sound of music. Ben loves to hear the Zig Zag Club musicians play, filling the air with the sounds and rhythms of jazz. And when he hears them, he plays along on a trumpet that nobody else can see--except one man, who opens the door to his dream". The most surprising and original picture book of the season."
