Biography/History:
Born in Santa Cruz, California to German-Jewish immigrants Emanuel, a shoe merchant, and Jane Mayer Hirschfelder. Fannie had at least one sibling, a brother named Edward Moss. In 1875 Hirschfelder married Abraham Bernheim, a merchant who immigrated from Germany. She lived in San Buenaventura and Los Angeles, California. The couple had three children: Hortense, Lester W., and Monroe.
Summary:
A pre-printed volume comprising autographs collected by Fannie Hirschfelder Bernheim while living in Santa Cruz and San Buenaventura, California, spanning the years from 1873 to 1883. Friends and family wrote poems, prose, and signed their names in friendship and love. One page has a drawing along with the autograph. Some autographs are signed by family members such as her brother Edward in 1873 and her husband Abraham in 1883. The volume entitled Album of love was published in New York by Leavitt & Allen after 1852. The title is stamped in gold on the cover and printed on title page. The leaves consist of blue, pink, and yellow paper. The title page is illustrated with a lithograph. There are four plates of lithographs in the volume depicting women. The volume has a decorative, stamped binding and spine.
