Summary:
Bhabapur Mines wanted to explore the possibility of using a new mining technique known as Continuous Surface Miner (CSM) replacing its drilling and blasting process. However, BM was not sure whether moving to a newer technology would actually be beneficial both technically and economically. To explore the feasibility of the CSM it decided to conduct a trial and Mining Machinery Limited was given a contract to excavate 250,000 tons of bauxite and 50,000 tons of overburden. The trial is supposed to be completed in 60 days time. However, the actual implementation of the contract did not go as planned and MML took 138 days to complete the job. Students are asked to analyze the data given in the case and explore the cost and efficiency of using CSM as opposed to traditional methods of mining.
